The float pod, also known as a sensory deprivation or isolation tank, was first developed in 1954 by Dr. John C. Lilly, a medical doctor and neuropsychiatrist. While conducting research at the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Lilly explored the effects of sensory deprivation on the human mind, laying the foundation for the float experience we know today.
It wasn’t until the early 1970s that floatation tanks became more widely available. Glenn Perry, inspired by a workshop led by Dr. Lilly, began designing and selling the first commercial float tanks in 1972. This helped introduce the therapeutic potential of floating to a broader audience.
Floatation gained momentum in the 1980s, with growing public interest fueled in part by the 1980 film Altered States. While the industry faced challenges during that decade, including health concerns related to shared water, the concept never fully disappeared.
Over the years, floatation therapy has seen renewed interest, particularly in Europe and wellness-focused areas of the U.S., like the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, float pods have become a staple in many modern spas, offering a peaceful, restorative experience backed by decades of curiosity, innovation, and healing.
